James Steven Childress passed away on April 16, 2023, at age 76, in St. Augustine, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Childress and Mary Moore; his stepmother, Christine Childress. He was affectionately called “Daddy”, “Papa Jim”, “Jimmy”, “Jimbo”, and “Childress” by his family and close friends.
Jimmy attended Northside High School and Virginia Western Community College. He was a Vietnam Veteran who proudly served in the United States Air Force. He worked as a Computer Technician with Verizon Phone Company (formerly C&P Telephone) until his retirement in 1992.
He loved time with family and friends, movies, music, bowling, and shooting pool. He enjoyed hunting, operating his Ham Radio (W4WWGHRO), classic cars, and auto racing. He was honest, caring, happy, and knew no strangers. He lived with his daughter during his final years while struggling with Parkinson’s Disease. May we all remember the “508” story and be comforted that he is with the Lord.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura Childress Morse; “favorite son-in-law” Patrick Morse; grandchildren, Nicholas Morse, Preston Morse, Sarah Morse, and Madelyn Morse; and great-grandchildren, Abigail, and Emilia. He is also survived by his sister, Libby Wagner; his sister, Melissa Childress Riner; brother-in-law, Eddie Riner; stepbrother, Jerry Carbaugh and wife, Beverly; stepbrother, Larry Carbaugh and wife, Georgia, several nieces, a nephew, and numerous loved cousins.
