Luther Joseph Light, 93, of Roanoke, Va., passed to his Heavenly home on Friday, July 14, 2023.
Luther was born in Franklin County, Va., on September 23, 1929, to the late Carl Wilson Light and Ethel Hardy Light. He was also preceded in death by his identical twin brother, Carlton Light, and brothers, Willard Light, Clarence Light, and Auburn Light.
Luther is survived by the love of his life of 66 years, Irene DeLong Light; children, Diane Conner and husband, Kevin, Steven Light and wife, Lisa, Dennis Light, and Amy Grammer and husband, Shannon; grandchildren, Joseph (Joe) Ross and wife, Tarena, Nick Bilbro, Kyndal (Poodle) Grammer Beeker and husband, Austin, Ali Maidmont and husband, Jason, Abigale (Abby) Light, and Hannah Light; great-grandchildren, Jared (Little Joe, Little Buddy) Ross and Ainsley (Peanut) Ross.
He is also survived by a brother, Howard Light and wife, Shirley; sister, Mildred Kennedy; sisters-in-law, Gladys Light and Ann Light; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann Dalton and husband, Tom and Marvin DeLong and wife, Lynne; special nieces, Teri McIntyre and Dawn DeLong; as well as a host of other nieces and nephews.
Luther attended Jefferson High School and served in the United States Army being stationed in Berlin, Germany during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Clover Creamery, Light’s Grocery and retired from the Roanoke City Health Department.
Luther was a lifelong member of Waverly Place Baptist Church and served as head usher, deacon, trustee, Sunday School officer, Sunday School teacher as well as having served on most committees in the church.
He was an avid sportsman who loved bowling, UVA sports, and the New York Yankees. He loved being outside and cutting wood. Luther thrived on hard work, but his greatest love was his family, and he was happiest when he was surrounded by family.
