Nancy Dobyns Wood, 85, of Salem, Va. retired into the safe haven of the Lord’s arms on Monday, April 3, 2023.
She was a member of the Shenandoah Baptist Church where she had volunteered numerous years in the nursery, AWANAS and Vacation Bible School. She was a homemaker who loved taking care of her family.
Nancy’s memberships included the Castle Garden Club and Ladies Auxiliary, both of Fincastle; Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Leisure Ladies Bowling League, both of Roanoke. She had been a chaperone for several Miss Botetourt’s who went on to the Miss Virginia Pageant.
She had been a foster parent through Roanoke City Social Services for numerous years as well as a member of the Foster Parent Association of the Roanoke Valley and the Support Group of Roanoke City.
Her hobbies included a love for doing for others, gardening, decorating, reading her gardening and bird books, sewing, bird watching and providing a safe haven for abused children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Wood; parents, Paul P. and Gladys M. Dobyns; brothers, Paul P. Dobyns Jr. and Allen F. Dobyns; sister, Phyllis Breedlove; daughter-in-law, Sharon Wood; and her furry friends, Callie and Muffin.
Survivors include her son, Larry P. Wood of Gordonsville, Va.; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy W. and John Brummett of Reidsville, N.C., Ruby W. and Tom Hansen of Fairfax, Va., Paula W. and Van Hoback of Salem, Va., and Rebecca A. Johnson of Salem, Va.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister and brothers-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) Dobyns of Vinton, Va., J.C. Breedlove of Big Island, Va., and Cecelia and David Chapman of Salem, Va.; brother, Terry P. Dobyns of Forest, Va.; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Teresa Kincer, Wanda Taylor, Linda Massengill, Carla Tamayo, and Karen Fralin; along with her cats, Rocco, Bella Grace and Arthur.
