Charles Edwin Dennis III

Charles Edwin Dennis III, 81, of Roanoke, Va., devoted husband and loving father, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday night surrounded by his family. Charlie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty; his son, Kevin Dennis; daughter, Sharon Dennis Simmons (Johnny); and his grandchildren who were his pride and joy, JC Simmons, Callie Simmons, Taylor Simmons, Danielle Watson; and friend, Chad Frangowlakis. Charlie proudly served in the United States Army. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1952 where he was a member of the Core of Cadets and the Diving Team. He worked for the IRS for over 30 years and always made certain that his children filed an accurate tax return before the deadline. He loved to play golf and bowl but one of his greatest joys besides his grandchildren was going to see his beloved Hokies play. He was a strong supporter of his alma mater and served with honor on the board of Directors for the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club. We are sure his blood ran Orange and Maroon. He was a Little League Baseball Coach with the Cave Spring Nationals for many years. His Allstar team in 1976 went to the State finals, he was very proud of his teams accomplishments. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Denise and Sabrina from Amedysis Hospice for the care given to Charlie. In lieu of flowers we suggest memorials be made in Charlie’s name to Christ Lutheran Church, 2011 Brandon Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24015 or to the Virginia Tech Football Chaplin Program in care of Johnny Shelton, Virginia Tech Football Chaplin, 205 Jamerson Athletic Center, Blacksburg, VA 24061.
