Evelyn Marie Long
Evelyn Marie Long, 85, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 3, 2010. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Verna Mabe; and husband, Earl Long. As a member of “The Greatest Generation,” Evelyn served her country faithfully by working at the Radford Arsenal during World War II. She worked as a recreation leader at Grandin Court Recreation Center for many years and did an amazing job as a multitasker teaching, bridge, slimnastics, ceramics, and organizing teen dances and neighborhood carnivals and games. Evelyn was a longtime member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church where she especially enjoyed her Sunday School fellowship. She was an avid bowler and member of the Virginia Bowler’s Hall of Fame. In her later years she enjoyed playing Bridge at the Mountain View Senior Recreation Center. She was a true “people person” who never met a stranger and also never met a stray dog or cat she wouldn’t take home. Survivors include her son, Michael Long and wife, Laurel; grandsons, Benjamin and Gregory, who were the apples of her eye; great-grandson, Aidan Borzotra, all of Salem; and sisters, Dorothy Lawson, of Austinville, Va., and Edna Edwards, of Roanoke. Also surviving are several beloved nieces and nephews.
