Hilda Allene Garrett Mills
Hilda Allene Garrett Mills, 89, of Roanoke, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday evening, February 24, 2011. She was born April 8, 1921, in Buena Vista, Va. to the late Gordon William and Carrie Chittum Garrett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Lawrence Mills, a son, Larry “Brother” Mills, and a sister, Opal G. Howell. Allene was a lifelong member of 9th Street Church of the Brethren. She sang in the church choir for many years and was a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the fraternal benefit society, U.C.T. (United Commercial Travelers), where she reached the rank of Supreme Counselor. She loved to bowl and even won several gold medals in the Virginia Commonwealth Games. She volunteered much of her time to the Rescue Mission and enjoyed helping others. She was an avid “Hokie” fan. She loved to travel and never met a stranger anywhere she went. One of her biggest joys was being able to watch her grandson, Trey, play baseball, and even traveled to watch him play in the Dixie Youth World Series and was considered the “Team Nanny”. Allene was a loving mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and friend. Left to cherish her memory are her son and former daughter-in-law, Chuck and Missy Mills, of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Victor Wright, of Reidsville, N.C.; grandchildren, Danny Wright and wife, Melissa, Dana Wright, Eric Mills and wife, Amy, Josh Mills and Trey Mills; great-grandchildren, Victoria and Alyssa Wright, Tyler, Autumn and Jack Mills; brother and sister-in-law, “Buddy” and Alice Garrett; sister and brother-in-law, Irma and Frank McBride.
