Howard Nichols Dooley, Jr.
Howard Nichols (Buddy) Dooley Jr., 91, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2010. The eldest son of Howard N. and Lula N. Dooley of Vinton, he was born on November 28, 1918. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Hawpe, Loretta Moorer, and Audrey Najjum, all of Roanoke; and two brothers, Charles Dooley, of Roanoke, and Douglas Dooley, of Vinton. Howard was a long time member of Oakland Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon and on many committees of the church. He was also a member of the Sanctuary Sunday School Class. During World War II he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of Mended Hearts of Roanoke and volunteered at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was an avid bowler who keenly followed many sports. He was retired from Tidewater Supply, Inc. Early in his career, Howard worked at Norfolk Western for 17 years.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lula C. “Lou” Dooley; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce D. and Richard Ikenberry, of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Krista I. Fuller and husband, Fred, of Raleigh, N.C., and Dina I. Almerini and husband, Christopher, of Winston Salem, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Fuller and Emily Almerini. Also surviving are three sisters, Ann Booth (J.D.), of Vinton, Nora Moores, of Louisville, Ky., and Jeri Bergman, of Roseburg, Ore.; brother, C. Eugene Dooley (Sandra), of Powder Springs, Ga.; sister-in-law, Jeanette Dooley, of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews and their families.
