Oscar W. Smith
Oscar W. Smith, 82, of Salem, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. He is the son of the late Clarence and Lucy Smith. Oscar, who was known for his kind heart and witty sense of humor, is best remembered as a devoted husband and loving father. He and the love of his life, Beulah Gertrude “Gertie,” celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this past December. Together they raised four children, Sandra Secrist, wife to Richard, Patricia Stines, wife to Ray, Oscar W. Smith Jr., husband to Kim, and Dwayne “Dee” Smith, husband to Dawn. One of his fondest joys was spending time with his eight grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. He has one surviving sister, Virginia Holt, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother, Margaret Childress, Evelyn Stinnett, Mary Eubank, and Clarence Smith Jr. Oscar proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years and the Army Reserves 80th Division for an additional 18 years. In his free time he enjoyed bowling with Gertie and participating in the VFW and Fort Lewis Lion’s Club, in which he was an honorary lifetime member. As a devout Christian, he faithfully attended Faith Wesleyan Church. Oscar was also a longtime successful business owner. This year marked the 51st anniversary of the founding of Oscar W. Smith Mechanical Contractors, Inc., which will be carried on by the family.
