GRAUSBC 2013 Annual Meeting

The Greater Roanoke Area USBC Annual Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 11:30AM.  The meeting will be held at AMF Hilltop Lanes, 5918 Williamson Road, Roanoke, VA.  The Youth meeting will be held after the Annual Meeting.  Please try to attend.  This meeting is open to all local association members, and will include election of officers and directors.

Former Goodtimers Secretary, RVWBA Hall of Fame Member Thelma Manning Passes Away

Thelma Miller Manning, 99, of Roanoke, went to sleep at her home Saturday, February 9, 2013, and will rest until Jesus returns to take us all to heaven. She was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Harrison Miller; mother, Lula Oleva Southerland Miller; brother, Benjamin Carl Miller; husband, Raymond Leo Manning. She is survived by a special nephew, Stanley Brown Lee; special friends, Charlie Gusso, Bo Wise, Lucille Graves (housekeeper), Basil Turner (lawn keeper), Rick Hoosier (stylist), Al Franklin and Good Timers, Arlie Mabry and Patrick Mehfoud; her live-in companion for 10 years, Darkas Mason LPN, and her children, James M. McCauley III, Keith McCauley and wife, Yuonne, Susan Mehfoud and husband, Patrick, Dwayne McCauley and wife, Cyndy and many grandchildren; special pets that she loved, Penny (dog), Angel (cat) and Stinky (cat).

Thelma retired at age 65 as a Chief Rate Clerk with N & W Railroad, now Norfolk Southern. She formed the first railroad retirement luncheon at the country club with seven people and ended up with 200 by year 2012. She also started a bowling league and became the secretary for 17 years. She filled the bowling alley with Good Timers; they bowled at All Star Lanes in 1968, then moved to Hill Top Lanes. The teams are still going strong today. She enjoyed playing Rummy and watching game shows on T.V. She was a member of Edgewood Christian Church.

The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice for their kindness and care.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Evergreen Burial Park. The family will be receiving friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey’s North Chapel.

RVWBA Hall of Fame Member Zaida Swedberg Passes Away

13230073-1_235531Zaida Virginia Beckwith Swedberg, 74, of Roanoke, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2013. In her youth, Zaida was a member of the Skate-A-Drone Rollerskating Performers. She retired after 34 years as Executive Director of the Greater Blue Ridge Division of the March of Dimes and was an avid bowler for many years where she was inducted into the Roanoke Valley USBC Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Swedberg Sr.; her parents, Charles E. and Genevieve L. Beckwith; and is survived by one daughter and three sons, Richard E. Swedberg Jr. (Alena Sehnal), Rodney E. Swedberg, Robin E. Swedberg (Jennifer), Zaida S. Cassell (Ronald); two brothers, Charles E. Beckwith (Barbara), George A. Beckwith (Betty); five grandchildren, Angela S. Webb, Katie L. Cassell, Kara L. Cassell, Richard E. Swedberg, Zaida V. Swedberg; three step grandchildren, Ashley D. Long, Amber L. Dudding, D. Matt Dudding two great grandchildren, Joshua A. Webb, Alexis R. Cassell; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Oakey’s East Chapel with Minister Mickey Witcher officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution, please consider the March of Dimes .

In Memorium – Patti Sink (1993 RVWBA Hall of Fame Inductee)

Patricia W. Sink, 70, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. She was a member of the Roanoke Valley Bowling Association Hall of Fame. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Virginia Wright. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Ronnie Sink; son, Kenneth Ray Sink; grandson, Joshua Robert Sink; loving companion, Coco; sisters-in-law, Karolyn Sink and Sandra Sink; brother-in- law, Bobby Sink; and several nieces and nephews.
