Everyone knows the Commonwealth Games have moved from the Roanoke Valley to Lynchburg beginning this year (2017). But not everyone knows that the Bowling Event is still at NRV Superbowl. Amanda Collins is now waiting for the lists of youth athletes that qualified this bowling season to come to her as in years past … the e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org. The 2016 Virginia State 600 Bowling Club Annual Tournament will be held in Richmond at Bowl America Eastern. The doubles event will be October 15, 2016 (check-in: 1:00pm, bowling: 2:00pm) and the singles event will be October 16, 2016 (check-in: 9:30am, bowling 10:30am). Entry form, rules and host hotel information are available on our FORMS page under the “Other” category. Entry deadline is October 10, 2016. No “walk-ins” are allowed.
The 600 Club is open to any sanctioned female that has ever bowled a sanctioned scratch 600 series. If you are not already a member, please contact Mary-Ann Keyes (804-861-2429) for more information.
Edward M. Childress, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016. He was preceded by his mother and father, Stella and Edward Childress; a sister, Nadine Mitchell; brothers, Clyde, Paul, William, and J. C. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Childress; a sister, Virginia Hunziker; sisters-in-law, Ellen Childress, Christen Stump, and Doris Price; brother-in-law, Shelbourn James; along with many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Childress was an avid bowler, bowling the first 300 game in Roanoke in 1964, and was voted in to the Bowling Hall of Fame in 2011 for his Outstanding Performance in the Sport of Bowling. He loved working at the Berglund Center, and he retired from the Singer Furniture Company. He served proudly in the United States Army and was a longtime member of the Oakland Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Friendship Manor, the Salem Veterans Hospital, the hospice group and his baseball buddy, Charlie Givens for the great care provided during his illness.
