The United States Bowling Congress has canceled all remaining national events for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The full announcement can be read on bowl.com.
Governor Northam signed Executive Order Sixty-Five and presented the second phase of the “Forward Virginia” plan to continue safely and gradually easing public health restrictions while containing the spread of COVID-19. Unfortunately, bowling centers are not allowed to open yet. Unless something changes, they will be closed at least until Virginia enters Phase 3, which could be another 2 to 4 weeks.
Section B CONTINUED RESTRICTIONS
- “Certain Recreational and Entertainment Businesses:
All public access to recreational and entertainment businesses set forth below shall remain closed:
a. Indoor theaters, Indoor performing arts centers, indoor concert venues, and other indoor entertainment centers;
b. Historic horse racing facilities; and
c. Bowling alleys, skating rinks, arcades, amusement parks, trampoline parks, fairs, carnivals, arts and craft facilities, escape rooms, and other places of indoor public amusement.
Cleaning of bowling balls with ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL ONLY will be allowed until further notice. Also note the FAQ regarding the temporary waiver of rules 106a,106b, 320a and 320b regarding league and tournament play.
The rule regarding no balance holes is still expected to take effect on August 1, 2020. Despite the shutdown of the bowling industry caused by the coronavirus pandemic, USBC clearly feels there has been enough notice given to allow adequate time for players to have made adjustments to their equipment.
The USBC will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and can rescind the waiver of Rules 106a,106b, 320a and 320b and the allowance of isopropyl alcohol for cleaning at any time.
