Hall of Famer Mary “Sam” Rutledge Passes Away

Mary Madeline (Sam) Barksdale Rutledge, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family. Nothing made her happier than to have a house full of children of all ages coming and going. She loved the out of doors, whether it be planting a garden, planting flowers or just neatening up nature. She had a passion for bowling and was inducted to the Roanoke Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992. She was one of the premier lady bowlers in the Roanoke Valley during the 1970’s and 1980’s. She remained active, bowling in two leagues until just before her passing. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Fairview Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave., Roanoke. Son, Bill Rutledge will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Oakey’s North Chapel, 540-362-1237. Memorials in her memory may be made to Ryan Shelor Fund, P.O. Box 1145, Salem, Va. 24153.

John H. Boettjer Sr. Passes Away

John H. Boettjer Sr., 65, of Roanoke, Va., died on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Berniece Boettjer; two brothers, Glen Boettjer and Henry Boettjer Jr. and a granddaughter and grandson. Surviving are his wife, Rebecca S. Boettjer; children, Brian Boettjer, John Boettjer Jr. and wife, Tammy; daughters, Tammy and her husband, Kevin, Deborah Casey and husband, Vincent, Matthew Boettjer and special child, Andrea Boettjer; brothers, David and Fred Boettjer; and sister, Marylynn Black in Indiana; and seven grandchildren. John was an avid bowler and golfer.

Live Streaming of 2010 U.S. Women’s Open

If you haven’t already heard, the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open has been put on hiatus by the USBC. But the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open takes place in the extremely near future. If you enjoy watching the cream-of-the-crop women bowlers, then don’t miss the live stream of this year’s U.S. Women’s Open. Beginning Friday May 7 and continuing through May 11, watch the live stream from qualifying until the end of match-play. The finals will be televised live on ESPN2 at 8:00pm on Wednesday, May 12.

2010 USBC Annual Convention Concludes

The 2010 Annual USBC Convention concluded Saturday (May 1). Here is an overview of some of the announcements and amendments.

Announcements:

  • creation of a new independent corporation to oversee and manage SMART funds
  • a new credit card partnership with Nationwide that gives card users free USBC national membership and other bowling-related benefits
  • U.S. Women’s Open on hiatus for 2011
  • U.S. Bowler magazine will be an electronic-only publication
  • U.S. Youth Bowler will continue to be mailed to homes
  • 2011 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships will be broadcast exclusively on BOWL.com

Passed amendments:

  • LEAGUE RULES
    • Rule 102c: Requires bank statements to be sent to the president
    • Rule 102f: Changes the time frame for retaining treasurer records from 120 days to one year from completion of the season
    • Rule 106a: Allows for each game or frame to be bowled on a different pair of lanes
    • Rule 111c: Gives leagues more flexibility for requesting pre/post bowling
  • TOURNAMENT RULES
    • Rule 319a: Treats all averages, including summer averages the same
    • Rule 320a: Allows for each tournament game or frame to be bowled on a different pair of lanes
    • Rule 329: Changes the time frame for protesting rule infractions to 72 hours and the time frame for appealing tournament management’s decision to 10 days
