Another Local Bowler Passes On

Harold Thomas Witcher was born on December 13, 1943 to the late Birdie Steptoe-Witcher and Thomas Witcher. He was unexpectedly called home to be with God on Sunday, July 12, 2009. Harold accepted Jesus as his Savior and was a member of Central Baptist Church where he was previously a member of the Usher Board and a Deacon. He retired from Steel Dynamics, Inc. (formerly Roanoke Electric Steel) where he worked for 41 years. Harold was an avid bowler and belonged to several bowling leagues.

Roanoke Hall of Famer Passes Away

Alma F. Johnson, 87, of Bluffton, S.C., passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gustave Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was an avid bowler for over 50 years and worked at Lee-Hi Lanes for over 20 years. In March of 2004, she was inducted into the Roanoke Valley Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame.

As part of its continued effort to help bowlers understand the nuances of bowling ball motion, the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications department has teamed up with Mo Pinel to create a form that will help certified coaches and pro-shop professionals accurately assess the effectiveness of a bowler’s bowling ball arsenal. Bowling Added to 2009 AAU Junior Olympic Games

Bowling will makes its debut at the largest national multi-sport event for youth in the United States this year. The bowling event will be held at Plaza Lanes Family Sport Complex from Aug. 1-3. The competition is open to any USBC Youth Member who meets the American Athletic Union (AAU) age requirements since qualifying for the Junior Olympic Bowling Event is not required this year. Entry deadline is July 17. Additional information is available HERE.
