Hall of Famer Mary “Sam” Rutledge Passes Away

Mary Madeline (Sam) Barksdale Rutledge, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 29, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family. Nothing made her happier than to have a house full of children of all ages coming and going. She loved the out of doors, whether it be planting a garden, planting flowers or just neatening up nature. She had a passion for bowling and was inducted to the Roanoke Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992. She was one of the premier lady bowlers in the Roanoke Valley during the 1970’s and 1980’s. She remained active, bowling in two leagues until just before her passing. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Fairview Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave., Roanoke. Son, Bill Rutledge will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Oakey’s North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
